Is your business located in Sweden or are you doing business with companies in Sweden? Then you have to be aware of July 1st 2025 where PEPPOL becomes the new standard as Sweden phases out ESAP 6.

Sweden is modernizing its e-procurement system by replacing the EDIFACT-based SFTI ESAP 6 standard with the more advanced Peppol BIS standards. This transition, set to be fully implemented by July 1, 2025, will improve efficiency and interoperability in public sector procurement.

This move to Peppol BIS underlines the Sweden’s commitment to a streamlined, global-standard e-procurement system. Businesses are encouraged to prepare early to ensure a smooth transition.

Why the change?

The SFTI Steering Committee has decided to phase out ESAP 6 to align with global standards and embrace more modern solutions.

Peppol BIS provides standardized message formats for key procurement processes such as ordering, invoicing, and catalog management. These formats are clearer, more consistent, and better suited for modern digital trade.

What does this mean for businesses?

This change affects suppliers and buyers in Sweden’s public sector must adopt to one of the Peppol-formats, in order to maintain compliance.

  • Peppol BIS Catalog without response 3
  • Peppol BIS Punch Out 3
  • Peppol BIS Ordering 3
  • Peppol BIS Order Agreement 3
  • Peppol BIS Despatch Advice 3
  • Peppol BIS Billing 3

SFTI (Single Face To Industry) is supporting this transition with resources like Excel templates and tools to help suppliers generate Peppol-compliant XML messages.

What is Peppol BIS?

Peppol BIS (Business Interoperability Specifications) is a set of standardized electronic document formats designed to facilitate seamless and efficient communication in procurement and supply chain processes.

These specifications ensure that businesses and public sector organizations can exchange information—such as orders, invoices, and catalogs—in a consistent and interoperable manner, regardless of their internal systems.

Peppol BIS is part of the broader Peppol framework, which promotes international standardization in e-commerce and e-procurement.
